Burrough was looking for a suitable name that would personify the full-bodied gin and have a strong association with the capital. Soon he found inspiration in the nearby Yeoman Warders, also known as ‘Beefeaters’, who have guarded the Tower of London since 1485 and are considered traditional symbols of the capital. The result was the “Beefeater London Dry Gin”, every bottle of which bears the image of “Beefeaters” till nowadays. In 1963 Beefeater had become the biggest export gin in the world, accounting for 3 out of every four bottles of gin imported to the US. And in 1969, it was the only gin on board the maiden voyage of the Queen Elizabeth II liner to New York. In 2005 Beefeater gin was acquired by Pernod Ricard Group.
