The history of Chateau Haut-Bailly begins in 1530, when the Goyaneche and Daitze families acquired several plots of land in Bordeaux with the aim of planting vineyards. In 1630, the Chateau and 36 hectares of land were sold to a Parisian banker named Le Baill and his partner Nicolas de Leeuwardet. In the 18th century, Chateau Haut-Bailly changed several owners, including even members of the Bordeaux parliament. In 1872, a new castle was built and the land was significantly expanded into the surrounding areas. In 1955, the castle was bought by Daniel Sanders. The property sold to him was in desperate need of renovation. The vineyards were in poor condition and had shrunk to a tiny 25 acres. Sanders completely renovated the estate and handed over the reins to his son Jean in 1979. In 1998, Chateau Haut-Bailly was bought by American banker Robert Wilmer. Over the course of several years, thanks to his willingness to put in all possible efforts, he and his wife managed to breathe new life into the estate. Today, the Chateau is managed by Veronica Sanders.
The Haut-Bailly terroir consists of sand mixed with gravel, underneath which lies a layer of sandstone that includes the remains of fossilized prehistoric fossils. The estate owns 28 hectares of vineyards, planted at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. Amazingly, 15% of these vines are over 100 years old. The basis of the vineyards are Cabernet Sauvignon (64%) and Merlot (30%), 6% of the area is devoted to Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vine is 35 years. Chateau Haut-Bailly is one of the rare cru class in the Graves region, producing only red, elegant and well-balanced wines.
