Château L’If is the brainchild of Jacques Thienpont, proprietor of the revered Pomerol property, Le Pin. He purchased the St-Emilion vineyard in 2010 noting its prime position on the St-Emilion plateau, facing the village and lying close to Troplong-Mondot. Originally called Château La Bouygue, Jacques changed its name inline with Le Pin, which means ‘pine tree’ while L’If means ‘yew tree’. His 8 hectares have been meticulously mapped and at least 4 hectares have been pulled out and replanted, with a drive to decrease the amount of Cabernet planted. Each parcel is treated separately in the vineyard and the winery. L’If’s annual production is small and with such a respected figure behind it, will no doubt follow in its Pomerol siblings footsteps to become a highly prized and anticipated wine each vintage.
